Peach Aviation (Fukuoka –> Narita) – How Good Is It Actually?

After spending the past few months covering Fukuoka’s food scene, I’m now setting off for Tokyo to continue my hunt for spots that are worth recommending. For today’s journey, I’m flying with Peach Aviation, ANA’s budget airline, to see if taking to the skies remains the ultimate sweet spot of cost and convenience compared to the competition of bullet trains and overnight buses.

So what was the experience on Peach really like? Does its balance of low fares and convenience make it a top choice to travel between Japan’s cities? And is it worth the visit? Let’s get to it. How Good is Peach Aviation Actually?

You can book Peach Aviation directly through their official site or via major OTAs like Trip, Agoda, or Skyscanner. As a low-cost carrier, base fares will be quite low, with add-ons like baggage, seat selection, and in-flight perks ultimately determining your total.

Here are some fare options available at Peach:

💺 Minimum Fare 💺
Base flight tickets* + 7kg carry-on baggage (*additional ¥640 ticketing fee)

💺 Standard Fare 💺
Base flight tickets + 7kg carry-on baggage + 20kg checked baggage + limited seat selection

💺 Standard Plus Fare 💺
Base flight tickets + 7kg carry-on baggage + 20kg checked baggage + seat selection + date change

Average Fares for Fukuoka – Narita (FUK-NRT)

Minimum Fare (including ticketing fee): One-Way Starter fares average around ¥6,000 to ¥9,000 for non-peak seasons, with prices hovering around ¥10,000 to ¥15,000 or higher during peak seasons.

Standard Fare: Per flight, expect to pay around ¥2,000 to ¥2,500 to upgrade to the Standard Fare for the 20kg bag allowance.

Pro Tip: Peach frequently runs flash sales throughout the year, with one-way fares often dropping as low as ¥4,000 to ¥5,000 per flight!

🚗 To Fukuoka Airport 🚗

Compared to basically any airport out there, getting to Fukuoka Airport’s Domestic Terminal from the city is incredibly fast and convenient.

Via the Kuko/Airport Subway Line, it’s only a 2 station, 5-minute train ride from Hakata Station, or a 5 station, 11-minute ride from Tenjin Station to Fukuoka Airport Station.

__________

✈️ Check-In Process ✈️

Unlike many domestic carriers that open check-in two hours before departure, Peach’s kiosks and counters open at 90 minutes prior to takeoff – though online check-ins are open at the usual two hours before.

Check-ins are done via Peach’s self-service kiosks. Scan your passport or booking info, confirm your travel details, and grab your boarding pass. If you’re travelling with only your carry-ons, you’re all set to head to security check.

If you do have checked bags, once you’ve completed check-in via the kiosks or online, head to Peach’s bag-drop counters, where a staff member will tag and process it for the flight.

__________

💬 Side Note: Observation Deck 💬

If you have some free time, either before or after checking-in, consider heading up to the Observation Deck on the 4th floor. Unlike most airport decks in Japan, Fukuoka’s puts you remarkably close to the runway, at only 60 meters from the nearest taxiway!

Since it was getting dark during my visit (and having already visited on my Jetstar flight), I skipped the observation deck today and just lounged around the 4th floor’s indoor seating areas while waiting for Peach’s check-in counters to open.

__________

🚶‍♂️ Heading to the Gate 🚶‍♂️

Once you’re ready to board, make your way up to the security check area on the 2nd floor.

The security checkpoint is separated into two wings (North & South) located on opposite sides of the terminal building. To save yourself on some walking, make sure to check your boarding pass first to see which wing is closest to your assigned gate – South Gate in my case, as I’m departing from Gate 4.

The actual security check was standard and efficient. Once through, you’re set to walk over to your gate.

__________

🚶‍♂️ Boarding Process 🚶‍♂️

The boarding process was straightforward and ran by smoothly. Peach uses a zone-based boarding sequence that starts from priority passengers, then window seats and back rows before progressively moving forwards to the front of the cabin.

Once cleared, head through the jet bridge for direct access to the plane.

💺 Flight Overview & Seat Impressions 💺

Here’s a quick rundown of my flight details:

Flight Number: MM364
Route: Fukuoka Airport (FUK) – Narita Airport (NRT)
Flight Time: 19:15 – 21:10 (1 hour 55 minutes)
Plane Model: Airbus A320
Seat Configuration: 3-3 (Narrow Body)

As for seat impressions? I’ll admit from just the photos alone, the seats don’t look particularly comfy. But weirdly enough, even though the seat cushions were on the thinner side, I still found them to be surprisingly decent for a low-cost airline experience.

The listed seat pitch sits at the LCC standard of 73.7cm (29 inches), leaving you with a couple of inches of clearance between your knees and the front seat – though less if you’re particularly tall.

And I’m not sure if it’s me, the thinner seats, or something else… but I thought the seats were a little lower to the ground than most airlines I’m used to. Could just be my imagination, but something to note.

As for the rest of the in-flight experience, it was clean, efficient, and ran smoothly – pretty much all you need on an under 2-hour ride. My particular flight departed around 20 minutes behind the listed time, but with the generous flight padding, still managed to touch down at Narita 15 minutes ahead of schedule.

✈️ At Narita Airport ✈️

After landing at Terminal 1, you’ll have to head down to the tarmac via mobile stairs and take a shuttle bus towards the main building.

Not ideal, but you do get the benefit of having the bus dropping you directly by the baggage claim area, saving you from the usual 5-10 minute walk.

__________
