When travelling between Japan’s major cities, you’re generally choosing between three options: the speedy but pricey Shinkansen, the budget-friendly overnight bus, or the sweet spot in between, a domestic flight.
For my trip between Fukuoka and Tokyo, I decided to fly with low-cost carrier Jetstar Japan. While flying does mean dealing with airport security, wait times, and terminal transfers, it sits as an attractive middle ground, with fares rivalling an overnight bus, at travel times that compete directly with a bullet train.
So what was the experience on Jetstar really like? Do the cost savings outweigh the inconvenience of heading to an airport? And is it worth the visit? Let’s get to it. How Good is Jetstar Japan Actually?

Average Fares for Fukuoka – Narita (FUK-NRT)
Basic Fare: One-Way Starter fares average around ¥6,000 to ¥9,000 for non-peak seasons, with prices hovering around ¥10,000 to ¥15,000 or higher during peak seasons.
With Luggage: Per flight, expect to pay around ¥1,900 for a 20kg checked bag, and up to ¥3,800 for 40kg.
Pro Tip: Jetstar Japan frequently runs flash sales throughout the year, with one-way fares often dropping as low as ¥4,000 to ¥5,000 per flight!

🚗 To Fukuoka Airport 🚗
Unlike the international terminal with no direct subway link, Fukuoka Airport’s Domestic Terminal is absurdly easy to get to.
Via the Kuko/Airport Line, it’s only a quick 5-minute train ride from Hakata Station or an 11-minute ride from Tenjin Station.

✈️ Check-In Process ✈️
Jetstar’s check-in procedure at Fukuoka airport is fairly straightforward, with most of the process handled via their automatic kiosks.
Simply scan your passport, confirm your travel details, and grab your boarding pass. If you’re travelling with just a carry-on, you’re basically ready to head to security check.
If you do have checked bags, head over to the bag drop counter, where a staff member will tag and process it for the flight.

💬 Side Note: Observation Deck 💬
If you have some time to kill, consider heading up to the Observation Deck on the 4th floor.
Unlike most decks in Japan, Fukuoka’s puts you remarkably close to the runway, at only 60 meters from the nearest taxiway!

To reach the boarding gates, you’ll need to pass through security, which is split into two wings on the terminal’s opposite ends.
As the Domestic Terminal is quite long, make sure to check your boarding pass first to see which wing is closest to your assigned gate.
The security check itself is pretty standard and moves quite quickly.

Boarding was nothing special, but surprisingly efficient.
Jetstar follows a sequence of: priority passengers, then window seats, and the rest of the cabin – slightly different than most carriers, but it’s a great system to speed up boarding time.

💺 Flight Overview & Seat Impressions 💺
Here’s a quick rundown of my flight details:

Route: Fukuoka Airport (FUK) – Narita Airport (NRT)
Flight Time: 13:05 – 14:55 (1 hour 50 minutes)
Plane Model: Airbus A320
Seat Configuration: 3-3 (Narrow Body)
As for seat impressions? As a low-cost budget carrier, it’s definitely workable! The listed seat pitch on Jetstar’s website is 73.7cm (29 inches), which sounds a bit tight on paper. In practice, while the legroom is on the lower end, I still had a decent gap between my knees and the seat ahead. And to maximize the limited space they have, Jetstar’s seatback pocket is positioned up behind the headrest, giving your legs a tiny bit more space to work around.
Other than that, the flight itself was clean, efficient, and uneventful. For an under 2-hour flight, that’s pretty much all you need! And despite the 10-minute departure delay on my flight, we managed to touch down at Narita 10 minutes ahead of schedule.

If you booked window seats, the scenery is definitely worth keeping the shade open (at least from time to time.)
While an afternoon flight misses out on the golden-hour sunrise & sunset lighting, you still get some scenic views of Fukuoka city upon takeoff, panoramic views of the sky en route, and Chiba Prefecture during landing.

✈️ At Narita Airport ✈️
After landing at Terminal 3 of Narita Airport, be prepared for a decent walk to the arrival hall – with outdoor running track-inspired corridors and several escalators.
A long journey, but a literal straightforward path.

🚗 To Tokyo: Transportation Options 🚗
Despite Narita being notoriously far from central Tokyo, you do have several transit options to choose from depending on your preferred balance of price, speed, and convenience.
🚌 Airport Bus (Convenience Option) 🚌
Fare: ¥1,500 (Day), ¥3,000 (Night)
Travel Time: ~65 minutes directly to Tokyo Station (more during peak hour traffic)
Location: Right outside Terminal 3 at Bus Stop #2
Tips: The most convenient option, skipping the walk to Terminal 2, and your bags are loaded into the cargo hold underneath. However, you may need to wait for a later bus during peak hours.
🚆 Narita Express (Speed & Comfort Option) 🚆
Fare: ¥3,140 (One-Way), ¥5,200 (Round-Trip),fully covered with a JR Pass
Travel Time: ~56 minutes to Tokyo Station
Location: Terminal 2, requiring a 10-minute walk or taking the airport shuttle bus.
Tips: Highly recommended if you are using a JR Pass. Features spacious reserved seats & dedicated luggage racks.

🚆 Keisei Main Line (Budget Option) 🚆
Fare: ~¥1,080
Travel Time: ~1 hour 20 minutes to Tokyo Station (transferring at Nippori to JR Yamanote Line)
Location: Terminal 2, requiring a 10-minute walk or taking the airport shuttle bus.
Tips: The cheapest option via a standard commuter train. Offers the flexibility to reach other hubs in Tokyo via quick station transfers (Shibuya, Ikebukuro, Akihabara, etc.)

🚗 To Narita Airport 🚗
Heading back to Narita Airport your primary options will be the following: Keisei Line, Narita Express, Airport Bus.
Pro Tip: For early morning flights before 8:30 A.M., getting to Narita Airport from central Tokyo can be extremely risky if not impossible, as the earliest morning trains from Tokyo don’t arrive at Narita until around 6:30 A.M.
To avoid any unnecessary morning stress, consider booking a budget layover hotel near Narita Station the night before, and taking a quick 10-minute train ride to Narita Airport the next morning.

🚶♂️ To Narita Airport Terminal 3 🚶♂️
Jetstar operates out of Terminal 3 at Narita, which lacks direct train station access.
Once you arrive at Terminal 2 via train, you’ll either have to take their free terminal shuttle bus or make a 10-minute walk along their covered pedestrian corridor.

Jetstar’s check-in procedure at Narita Airport is fully automated, though slightly more hands-on than Fukuoka’s.
Scan your passport and fill in your travel details. Grab your boarding pass, and if you travelling carry-on only, you’re good to head straight to security!
If you do have checked bags, head on over to their Self Bag Drop area.
Place your luggage on the belt, scan your boarding pass, attach the printed bag tag, and confirm to send it down the line.

🍱 Side Note: Dining Options 🍱
A crucial detail to keep in mind – Terminal 3 has virtually no restaurant options once past security.
If you plan on grabbing a proper meal before your flight, make sure to stop by the Food Court area by the security gates first.
Here, you’ll find around a dozen restaurants and convenience stores like Matsuya, Ringer Hut, Tatsu Sushi, and Lawson.

🚶♂️ Heading to the Gate 🚶♂️
Once you’re ready, head over to the Domestic Security Check area. While standard in procedure, do keep in mind that queue times are subject to some heavy peak-hour bottlenecks. It took me almost 20 minutes just to clear security on today’s 8 A.M. flight…
Gate assignments can change daily, but today’s flight departed from Gate #171 at Terminal 3’s Satellite Terminal. If you’ve been keeping track, that’s the second 5-10 minute walk you’ll have to do to actually board the plane.

🚶♂️ Boarding Process 🚶♂️
Since there were no direct jet bridges on today’s flight gate, boarding required taking a shuttle bus out to a remote stand, followed by heading up a mobile stair to the plane.
A little inconvenient especially if you have multiple carry-on bags, but it does make for some nice photo opportunities on the open tarmac.

Here’s a quick rundown of my flight details
Flight Number: GK503
Route: Narita Airport (NRT) – Fukuoka Airport (FUK)
Flight Time: 07:40 – 10:00 (2 hours 20 minutes)
Plane Model: Airbus A320
Seat Configuration: 3-3 (Narrow Body)
Since both legs of this route feature their Airbus A320 fleet, the cabin layout and seats are identical to the Fukuoka – Narita flight.
The main highlight of note on this particular flight was the schedule padding – as despite taking off well beyond the 07:40 listed time at 08:08, we still ended up touching down in Fukuoka at 09:48, 12 minutes ahead of schedule.

As a morning flight after sunrise – the scene outside the window will be brightly lit throughout the flight.
Right after takeoff, you’ll catch aerial views over Narita and Chiba Prefecture, before spending most of the flight with a panoramic view of the clouds & skies, before closing out the journey with Fukuoka’s coastline.

✈️ At Fukuoka Airport ✈️
Compared to Narita’s Terminal 3, the journey from airplane to baggage claim at Fukuoka is thankfully much simpler. Just follow the arrival corridors, grab your bags, and you’re all set.

🚗 To Fukuoka: Transportation Options 🚗
Famously one of the most accessible airports in the world, getting to the city from Fukuoka Airport only takes a couple minutes.
🚆 Fukuoka City Subway (Fastest, Best Overall) 🚆
Fare: ¥260
Travel Time: 5 minutes (Hakata Station), 11 minutes (Tenjin Station)
Location: B1 Floor (Domestic Terminal)
Tips: Best option for almost every situation.
🚌 Nishitetsu City Bus (Direct Option) 🚌
Fare: ¥270 – ¥320
Travel Time: ~15-20 minutes (subject to traffic)
Location: Bus stops directly outside the Arrival Hall
Tips: A slightly better option if your hotel is between Hakata and Tenjin station.
🚗 Taxi / Rideshare (Convenience Option) 🚗
Fare: ~¥1,500 (Hakata Station), ~¥2,500 (Tenjin Station)
Travel Time: ~10-20 minutes (subject to traffic)
Location: Taxi stands directly outside the Arrival Hall
Tips: While I wouldn’t recommend a taxi at any other airport, the sheer proximity here makes it a surprisingly legitimate option for groups of 3-4. At ~¥550 per person, you get a door-to-door convenience that public transit simply can’t beat.

⭐VERDICT⭐
So how good is Jetstar Japan actually? It’s quite impressive! For a low-cost carrier, Jetstar offers an efficient, reliable, and budget-friendly option to travel between Fukuoka and Tokyo.
Compared to other transportation options, the stricter baggage weight limits and the detour to the airport (especially Narita’s Terminal 3) are certainly an extra hassle. But if that’s the tradeoff you have to make to get Shinkansen travel times at night bus prices, it’s a very attractive option!
