After trying out some really great-tasting Sukiyaki restaurants in Tokyo, I decided to do some research to see if I can find a similar Sukiyaki experience back home in Bangkok – with today’s findings leading me to Shabu Nashi.
Located right around Bangkok’s CentralWorld area, Shabu Nashi is a pretty cozy-looking restaurant, and looks to feature some pretty fancy cuts of A4 & A5 Wagyu. And with some pretty good reviews, this definitely seems like a good place for me to check out. But what exactly was the experience like? What are some of the sets available here? And is it worth the visit? Let’s get to it. How Good is Shabu Nashi Actually?

🥗 Appetizers 🥗
Whichever set you end up ordering, it’ll come with an Appetizer and a Salad.

For the appetizers, it’s a skewer of two soft-boiled quail eggs, tossed in a butter and shoyu sauce, topped with some Nori seaweed.
For something as simple as this, the flavors really do shine through here. The soft-boiled egg was rich and creamy, and the sauce added this salty, savory finish that’s full of flavor and sets you up for the main show.

I tried to bite half of it for some photos, but biting through soft boiled quail eggs can be quite… messy. Don’t be like me, and eat yours in a single bite.

And as for the salad, it’s a Japanese-inspired cos lettuce salad with a sesame yuzu dressing. Nice and refreshing, especially with that little kick from the Yuzu.

🥗 Set Vegetables 🥗

The set also comes with an assortment of vegetables, featuring some onions, leeks, carrots, mushrooms, spinach, tofu, and Shirataki (Konjac) Noodles.

🍳 Preparing your Sukiyaki 🍳
At Shabu Nashi, there’s a couple of things to do before you begin cooking your Sukiyaki.

Once your Sukiyaki pot (bowl?) arrives, you’ll notice that there’s a bit of mirin at the bottom.

To start, place the onions and leeks into the pot, and turn on the stove. As soon as the ingredients begin to heat up, you’ll immediately be met with the sweet aroma of the mirin and onions. (I went in not expecting anything much, but seriously… it’s incredibly fragrant!)

Let it simmer away for a bit – or as long as you’d like – and once you’re ready to continue, pour over the Warishita Sukiyaki broth and any other veggies, and you’re good to go.

__________
🥚 Raw Egg 🥚

Oh, and don’t forget to give the raw egg a quick stir. Shuabu Nashi serves their egg with only half of the egg white, and the higher yolk-to-white ratio really adds a touch of extra richness to the finished product.

🍳 Cooking your Sukiyaki 🍳

Once the Warishita broth and Egg are all set up, it’s now time to cook your Sukiyaki.

Start by grabbing a slice of the beef, and giving it a quick simmer in the Sukiyaki broth, stirring occasionally.

Cook times will vary depending on how you like your beef (10~20+ seconds,) but once it’s done, transfer it over to the raw egg, give it a mix around, and it’s ready to go.

So how was the beef here? I actually got their highest (non-Chef’s Special) set today, and I must say… the flavors were nothing short of wonderful! The beef had this intense sweetness to it from all that Wagyu fat, with subtle hints of the beef’s meaty flavors.

And with the amount of marbling present, the beef was very melt-in-your-mouth tender and pulls apart with very little force.

The Warishita broth was also really nice. Full of the usual sweet & savory flavors (plus the aroma of the onions and leeks,) presented in a light and smooth profile that works very well even if you just have the broth by itself. Top that off with the raw egg, and it’s really just an amazing well-rounded experience.
__________
🍚 Rice 🍚

For a different way to enjoy the Sukiyaki, you can also serve it with some rice, which comes included in the set.

__________
🍜 Shirataki Noodles 🍜

And in the bowl of Vegetables, you’ll also find some Shirataki (Konjac) Noodles. You can drop ‘em in the Sukiyaki anytime you like, but if you prefer a stronger flavor to the noodles, put it in towards the end of the meal once the Warishita broth has reduced down and has time to mix in with some of that beef and sweet Wagyu fat.
__________
🍨 Dessert – Lychee Granita 🍨

For dessert, you have the choice between Coconut or Lychee Granita. I went for the lychee one today, and between the light, yet slightly coarse texture of the ice crystals, to the sweet, citrusy notes of the lychee, the Grantia was a really nice touch to close off the meal.

⭐VERDICT⭐

So how good is Shabu Nashi actually? Yeah, this place is extremely good! I don’t typically go for the higher-priced option at restaurants (that’s where my friend comes into play in my reviews,) but for this occasion – the payoff was very much worth it.
The beef was sweet and tender, the Sukiyaki broth was full of flavor, and between the eggs, appetizers, and dessert, the experience wraps up into a really nice complete package, and definitely is a contender for one of the best Sukiyaki places I’ve visited in Bangkok. (Dare I say, it can even go toe-to-toe with stores in Japan!)
It’s on the pricier side of things (Prices aren’t inclusive of +7% VAT & +10% Service Charge on the menu,) but if your budget allows for a big meal like this, this place won’t disappoint.
So if you want to grab some great-tasting Sukiyaki with some incredibly impressive cuts of beef, then head on over to Shabu Nashi!

🚗 GETTING THERE 🚗

Shabu Nashi is located on Floor LG of Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok. Getting here via the BTS will require a bit of walking, as the restaurant is located right between Siam and Chit Lom Station. Whichever station you decide to exit from, it’ll be an 8 minute walk. Moderately far, but at least the skywalk bridge makes the journey a bit more comfortable.

💬 Final Words 💬
After having tried out Shabusen Ginza (one of Shabu Nashi’s inspirations) in Tokyo recently before this, I can definitely see the resemblance between the stores. In fact, even before learning about the inspiration, I already had a hunch that the two stores were kinda similar (or at least, the similarities were more than just a coincidence.)
But to wrap it up again, this place was surprisingly good. I’ll admit it might not be a restaurant for everyone, since it can be quite pricey. But if you have the budget, I really recommend you try this place out!
